After our daughter was born I couldn't wait to buy dolls for her. Much to my dismay, she, growing up with boys, never became attached to her dolls, so once again I packed up her dolls and let them go. This time instead of throwing them away I kept a few and sold, gave away or donated the others. Because I kept a few of my daughter's dolls our granddaughter now has dolls that once belonged to her mom (I think everyone should have a doll childhood doll of their mother's, I wish I did). Passed on are a lovely dolls house with custom made dolls to represent family members, Love and Touch Baby, American Girl Molly and a few others. I only hope she will love them and keep them for the next generation.
As an adult collector my favorite are small dolls. Dolls that can reside in doll houses and room boxes or vignettes. In the beginning I collected porcelain dolls similar to those found in magazines. Over the years I have developed a more discriminate approach to dolls. I have sold and traded many dolls in order to downsize the collection and make room for more selective choices. My collection now consists of a few antique dolls but mostly vintage to modern dolls ranging in size from 12" and smaller. I also love the small china heads and bisque dolls from the early 1900's.
My mother also collected dolls. She didn't have any of her childhood dolls, she had modern collectibles, doll house dolls, Ginny, Hitty, and AG Kit to name a few. We had a great time sharing the hobby together. Going to yard sales and doll shows, making accessories and creating holiday scenes was always a great time for us.
In 2007 I attended a doll show sponsored by the Maine-ly Dolls Club. After talking with members Anne S and Ruthi W I thought it would be fun to attend meetings and learn more about the Hobby and History of doll collecting. There are 21 members of the club and each person brings their own unique experience in the doll world. Some members design and sew clothes, some make dolls or repair and sell dolls while others just enjoy being part of the group and learning through sharing.
I had so much fun playing in this washtub with my Tammy doll. Although I no longer have the doll, I have a replacement and I still have the bathing suit. (1961) I think a few more Tammys need to be added to my collection!
Although I am a member of the Maine-ly Dolls Club this is my personal blog, a place for me to share my doll collection, club activities and information. If you are interested in becoming a member of Maine-ly Dolls Club leave your contact info and I will pass it on to the appropriate club officer. Please do not contact me about dolls you want to sell to help set a value/appraise your doll(s). I am not a doll appraiser or doll dealer. There are many excellent doll price guides and Internet searches available to help you research the dolls in your collection or ones you are trying to sell.
